秋季保健素湯 –

2. 鍋中加入2500毫升水,放入全部材料,武火煮至水滾,調文火煮1.5小時,最後下鹽調味即可。

Kudzu soup to clear heat and moisten lungs

The weather during autumn is dry, and that is why our skin would become dry, crack and itch easily. Can drinking snow fungus soup and applying moisturizer to the body relieve those conditions? The Chinese Medicine way of tackling the issue is more holistic than that, as we need to adjust our lifestyle.

During autumn, our diet should not focus merely on moistening the body. We should also practice the principle of ‘restrain’ in our diet to protect the lungs. In other words, we should nourish the lungs and take care of the qi in the organ. With a healthy qi in the lungs, we can strengthen the body and prevent pathogenic factors from invading our skin and trachea, prevent cold and flu, and prevent the skin from drying and itching.

We can consume an appropriate amount of ingredients that can moisten the lungs, induce salivation, nourish the yin, and moisten the body. These ingredients are snow fungus, American ginseng, lily bulb, sesame seeds, honey, loquat, dendrobium, almond, sea coconut, polygonatum, and ladybell root.

We also need to resist the temptation of oily, deep-fried, spicy, and heavily seasoned food. Since the weather during autumn is already dry, consuming heavily flavored food will only add fuel to the fire, causing our body to feel heaty, lips to crack, and skin to turn dry and giving us constipation. Hence, we should cut down on spicy and stimulating ingredients like ginger, onion, and garlic.

Avoid extreme exercises as excessive sweating can damage the yang. It is better to carry out subtler exercises like taichi, qigong, yoga, slow-jog, as these activities are in line with the principle of ‘refrain’ in Chinese Medicine.

Autumn health care vegetarian soup –
Kudzu and Pear soup with Chinese yam
Effects: Clears heat and moistens lungs. Relieve symptoms of dry skin, dry throat and dry eyes.
Ingredients: 1 kudzu, 2 pear, 1 carrot, 12g dried lily bulbs, 20g dried lotus seed, 20g dried Chinese yam, 2 candied dates
1. Rinse all ingredients thoroughly. Cut the peeled kudzu into pieces. Peel and core the pear and cut into pieces. Peel the carrot and cut into pieces.
2. Combine all ingredients with 2500ml of water in a pot and cook on high heat until boiling. Turn to low heat and simmer for 1.5 hours. Add salt to taste.
