沾寒沾凍、乞嚏頻頻、頭暈頭脹、喉嚨痛都是作病的症狀,中醫經常強調生病要戒口,其實從作病開始就要注意,尤其不宜吃生冷食物,因為當作病時身體已處於較弱或失衡狀態,如飲食生冷令胃部受寒,寒氣會循經侵犯肺部,令病症更嚴重。
打敗病魔首要條件是身體有足夠營養,脾胃負責吸收食物中的營養,生冷飲食會削弱脾胃功能,令康復之路更漫長。而且脾胃運化水液的功能全憑陽氣推動,生冷食物能直接損傷陽氣,亦會加重病情。
生冷屬陰,《內經》謂「陰勝則陽病」,作病/生病時暫時忍忍口,遠離生冷食物,「生」是指未煮過的食物,如沙律、刺身、壽司等;「冷」是指低於室溫的食物,例如剛從雪櫃取出的食物,有助身體盡快回復平衡狀態,加速痊癒。如染上風寒感冒,症狀為怕冷、頭痛、頸部肌肉痠軟、喉嚨痕癢、咳嗽痰色白、鼻塞流清鼻涕等,宜適量飲用炒米水,有助驅寒暖胃。

Should you eat raw and cold food when you are sick?
Getting chills, catching a cold, frequent sneezing, dizziness, headaches, and sore throat are all symptoms of illness. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes avoiding certain foods when sick. In fact, it’s important to be cautious and pay attention from the first onset of illness. One should abstain from consuming raw and cold foods, in particular. When you’re sick, your body is already in a weakened or imbalanced state. A diet of cold and raw foods may chill your stomach, allowing coldness to invade the lungs through the body’s channels/meridians, which can worsen the symptoms.
The key condition for combating illness is ensuring adequate nutrition. The spleen and stomach are responsible for absorbing nutrients from food. Consuming raw and cold foods weakens the functions of the spleen and stomach, prolonging the path to recovery. Moreover, transforming and transporting fluids in the spleen and stomach relies on the impetus of Yang energy. Raw and cold foods can directly harm one’s Yang energy, aggravating the illness.
Cold and raw foods are of Yin. According to the “Inner Canon,” when Yin is excessive, Yang diseases occur. As such, it is advisable to temporarily refrain from consuming such foods when one is ill. “Raw” refers to uncooked foods like salads, sashimi, and sushi. “Cold” refers to foods below room temperature, such as items just taken out of the refrigerator. Staying away from these foods helps the body restore balance quicker and speed up the healing process. If you are suffering from a cold with symptoms such as sensitivity to cold, headaches, sore muscles in the neck, itchy throat, cough with white phlegm, nasal congestion, and clear runny nose, consuming a moderate amount of fried rice water can help dispel the cold and warm the stomach.
