Know your list of stimulating foods to avoid
Chinese medicine emphasizes on avoiding certain food once your skin issues flare up, especially stimulating ingredients. Stimulating ingredients generally refer to those that can lead to fire in body, phlegm production, sores, or leading to relapse of old issues and worsening of new symptoms. You may feel doomed if there is so much you cannot eat. But if you slow down, you will find that there are six types of stimulating foods- activate fire, activate wind, aid dampness, collection of cold, activate blood and qi stagnation. Know your symptoms and adjust your diet accordingly.
Activate fire: hot natured food such as ginger, spring onion, garlic, chili, chives, onion, alcohol, lamb, fried food
Cause: These will aid heat and activate fire and your heat related symptoms will worsen after eating. Eating these can also worsen inflammation. Those with constipation, heat and thirst, itchy skin, sores on skin and eczema should avoid.
Activate wind: shrimp, crab, eel, shell fish, goose, egg, eggplant, bamboo shoot, fungus family
Cause: These food can activate wind and yang adding to symptoms of skin sores, skin allergies, eczema. It is especially not suitable for those with hives.
Collect cold: cold natured food such as watermelon, winter melon, bitter melon, persimmons, crab
Cause: These cold natured food will affect transport functions of the spleen. Those with asthenic spleen and stomach can have diarrhea after eating, abdominal bloating. They are not suitable for those with asthenic cold body types, prone to catching cold and diarrhea or those with joint pains.
Activate blood: Lamb, spinach, Chinese hawthorn, pepper, chili pepper
Cause: These ingredients can activate blood, those with bleeding type of symptoms such as high volume of menstruation, haemorrhoids, bleeding under skin, blood in urination should avoid.
Aid dampness & Qi stagnation: glutinous rice, rice wine, fatty meat, dates, milk, mango, lychee, durian, soy beans, pumpkin, sweet potato, taro
Cause: These foods are fatty and can aid dampness and production of phlegm affecting the functions of your digestive system. And these ingredients can stagnate qi leading to indigestion and abdominal bloating and discomfort. You may have abdominal discomfort after eating as well. Those with abdominal bloating and gassiness, damp heat body type and eczema should avoid.
