Tips to improve concentration when learning
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools will virtually ‘reopen’ next week online. Parents’ concern at this point is how to prepare their children for online classes. In order to improve children’s ability to learn, try these techniques below to help them concentrate:

Have a proper disciplined lifestyle
Should we allow our children to wake up late just because they do not have to go to school? The human body has a biological clock, a disrupted routine will cause us to lose focus, reduce our ability to remember things and affect our emotions when it comes to learning. Therefore, it is good to arrange a timetable similar to the one during school days. More importantly, avoid oversleeping, as it will take a toll on their health, causing them to procrastinate every morning.

Environment and ceremonial practices
When attending online classes, choose a quiet space with minimal decorations. Too many items around will distract students, especially toys. Put on school uniform during class to increase awareness of school, this will help them to be more engaged in their learning.

Manage their time well
Some parents tend to arrange extracurricular activities for their children but it does not always mean “the more, the better”, because children’s attention span is limited. Long hours of learning will cause them to be exhausted, hence reducing their ability to learn.

Children’s attention span can be estimated by multiplying their age by 3. For instance, a five-year-old can focus for about 15 minutes; 10-year-old’s attention span would be 30 minutes. It is a good practice to divide their learning sessions into smaller slots, and allow a 5 – 10 minute break in between.

Tea to boost the mind
Effects: Strengthens and calms the mind. Suitable for forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating.
Ingredients: 10g polygala, 10g sharpleaf galangal fruit
Preparation: Place all ingredients into thermos, rinse once with hot water, add in hot water and steep for 20 minutes until aroma develops. This tea can be re-browed until flavour weakens. For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Two weeks is one treatment course.
