How Seasonal Changes and Weather Can Affect Your Skin
When seasons change, the skin tends to be more prone to sensitivity symptoms such as redness, itching, swelling, and peeling. This happens because the sudden changes in temperature and humidity can throw the body off balance. It takes a bit of time to adjust, resulting in varying degrees of skin sensitivity and even triggering eczema flare-ups.
As we step into autumn, things start to contract. In traditional Chinese medicine, this is when the lungs, being associated with this season, play a vital role in defending the body. When the lungs are strong, they act like a shield, helping to keep out illnesses that might try to sneak in through the respiratory system and skin. But when the lungs are weak, the skin becomes dry and itchy. That’s why, as autumn sets in, it’s crucial to focus on lung health. The lungs favour moisture and dislike dryness. Consume moderate amounts of lung-nourishing foods like lily bulbs, polygonatum, radix adenophorae, wolfberries, and dendrobium. Incorporate fruits that nourish and moisturise the lungs, such as pears, persimmon, sugar cane, fig, loquat. Reduce intake of spicy and heat-inducing foods. If necessary, consider sipping on teas with lung-nourishing and moisturising properties.
