What soup is suitable post surgery?
A lot of people rush to replenish their bodies after having surgery. Fish soup is mild in nature, it can stimulate appetite, nourish the spleen and qi. A lot of people believe fish soup can help the wound recover, but fish soup is actually not suitable post surgery. Fish soup can promote muscle growth, and speeding up closure of wound can sometimes bring allergic reaction, pain and itch to the wound and form granulation.
Generally speaking, surgical wounds should recover within 1-2 weeks and the diet post surgery should be light. Surgery damages qi and blood, forming qi deficient body type. Aside from having rice water daily, you can also have soups that nourishes qi and strengthens the spleen. Fish soup should be saved for 1-2 weeks later.
Tips for soup to nourish qi and strengthen the spleen:
Add in ingredients such as Astragalus Root, codonopsis root, radix pseudostellariae
Potato soup with ginseng and Chinese yam
Effects: Suitable for post surgery asthenic qi and blood, pale complexion, fatigue.
Ingredients: 1 fresh ginseng, 1 fresh Chinese yam, 2 potatoes, 6 pitted Chinese dates, 10g dried longan, 2 candied dates, ¼ rice cup of millet, 30g pearl barley
1. Rinse all ingredients properly
2. Combine all ingredients with 2500ml of water, and cook on high heat until boiling. Turn to low heat and simmer for 2 hours. Add salt to taste.
Note: not suitable for those recovering from cold/flu.
