Chinese new year sweet soup
It is a custom during Chinese New Year to place a new year candy box at home. All kinds of sweets are placed in it to represent gathering of good luck and sweetness. Traditionally, there are “eight sweets”, which includes sugar winter melon, sugar lotus seed, sugar lotus root, sugar coconut, sugar coconut silk, sugar carrot, sugar water chestnuts and sugar kumquat that all are pickled by white sugar. According to an ancient Chinese medicine book, sugar can nourish the spleen and liver, relieve liver stagnation and regulate mood so eating candy can make you happy. But do not eat too much as excessive sweets will collect dampness that leads to phlegm, dampness body type and fatigue.
What to do if you have a lot of “eight sweets” after Chinese new year leftover? It is better to add some fresh ingredients and cook a pot of moisturising sweet soup suitable for the dry weather in winter without additional sugar!
