When you buy winter melon in the market during major and minor heat solar term, some merchants will give you a lotus leaf as winter melon and lotus leaf are good combination for clearing summer heat and dampness. This soup also has apple, which can burn fat and relieve symptoms such as lack of appetite, fatigue and obesity. Winter melon skin can promote diuresis and reduce bloating so it is better to cook winter melon soup with skin. Remember to clean the skin.

Tips for soup to clear heat and dispel dampness:
Appropriately add in ingredients such as bitter gourd, corn silk, mung beans, rice beans, hyacinth bean and purple haricot.

Winter melon soup with lotus leaves and apple
Effects: Clears summer heat, dispels dampness, burns fat, relieves summer heat, poor appetite, fatigue and obesity.
Ingredients: 600g winter melon, ½ pieces of fresh lotus leaves (or 20g dried lotus leaves), 1 apple, 40g coix seeds, 30g purple haricot, 1 dried citrus peel, 2 candied dates
1. Rinse all ingredients thoroughly. Cut winter melon into pieces. Core apple and cut into pieces.
2. Combine all ingredients with 2500ml of water in a pot and cook on high heat until boiling. Turn to low heat and simmer for 1 hour. Add salt to taste.
Note: Those with asthenic spleen and stomach and those prone to diarrhea can use hairy gourd to replace winter melon.
