Is fall a dehumidifier for your skin?
Even though the weather doesn’t seem fall like but its beginning to cool down at night and your skin is usually first to change seasons with feelings of tightness or even itch and crack due to dryness. Fall dryness is like a dehumidifier, if you imagine having a dehumidifier following you around, all the fluids in your body would be drained and your skin would tighten- all feeling quite unpleasant. This could be why fall at times seems depressing, since everyone is sucked quite dry. This is time to appropriately nourish yin and moisten the lungs to keep your skin moist. Since the lungs affect the skin and hair, and the spleen is considered ‘mother’ of the lungs, when we breathe in dry air, the lungs are first to be affected with lessened qi. Then the skin becomes try and may itch as well. In addition, moistness of skin is also affected by the food that we consume and how well the spleen absorbs the necessary nutrients to be delivered to the lungs and subsequently distributed to skin throughout the body. It is important to strengthen the spleen and stomach when we are trying to moisten the lungs and relieve dryness.
