Diarrhea during menstruation
Western medicine believes this is caused by hormonal estrogen imbalance during menstruation and bloodflow in the pelvic cavity affecting the stomach. Chinese medicine has another take on it and its mainly related to the liver. There’s a saying, ‘Liver holds blood’, and it’s the main organ related to blood. During menstruation, blood flows downwards to the uterus, those with hepatic blood deficiency will be affected, and the liver’s regulation function weakens. That will affect the spleen’s transporting and transforming functions, causing water retention in the body which becomes dampness. Dampness in the large intestine leads to diarrhea, especially for those with asthenic stomach and spleen, or those who are hot-tempered.
